Non Dairy Ice Cream Taste test
SO Delicious Dairy Free Wondermilk vs Simple Truth Oatmilk Non Dairy Frozen Dessert
My childhood memories of ice cream are associated with my grandmother. She has always had a sweet tooth. Every week she baked a cake, there were always frosted cinnamon rolls or pecan rolls on the counter and ice cream in the freezer.
My grandma would buy Neapolitan ice cream. We would prepare our ice cream bowls together. I would always choose the vanilla, she would get all three flavors in one scoop then she’d take a hand full of Ruffles plain potato chips and put them in the bowl for each of us. We would crush them up with our spoons. Although it sounds weird it was super tasty; sweet, and salty at its finest.
My other childhood ice cream memory is going to High’s ice cream shop with my grandma. To walk in on a hot summer day and see all those flavors, all those choices were super exciting for my eight-year-old self. Anytime we went I would either get the banana spilt (I got to eat it all by myself) or the bubble gum ice cream (with real gum in it). Those were the days.
Now my favorite flavor is butter pecan. Since I try to limit the amount of dairy I have I’m always on the lookout for plant-based ice cream options. While I was shopping in Kroger I picked up two brands; Simple Truth which is a Krogers store brand and SO Delicious.
Simple Truth Oatmilk non diary frozen dessert Maple Pecan Flavored
First 4 ingredients; water, sugar, pecans, and coconut oil

15g sugar per serving
SO Delicious dairy-free Wondermilk Buttery Pecan
First 4 ingredients; filtered water, organic cane sugar, pecans, organic tapioca syrup
260 calories per serving
22g sugar per serving
First impressions - SO definitely has more of a visual appeal it looks like there’s caramel in it. Simple Truth looks like a basic butter pecan ice cream.
Taste - I can taste the oat flavor in Simple Truth, I taste the oat flavor before the pecans, I’m not getting much of a butter flavor, not much sweetness. SO definitely has the buttery flavor in its title, the pecans come through and there’s just the right amount of sweetness.
Texture - SO has the creamy texture you would expect from ice cream. Simple Truth does not quite have the creamy texture it’s close but not quite.
And the winner is……
SO Delicious dairy-free Wondermilk Buttery Pecan is the hands-down winner for me, it’s delicious!!!! I wouldn’t even know this was a plant-based ice cream if someone served it to me in a bowl. This can compete with any dairy ice cream sold in the frozen desserts aisle. This is my new ice cream brand, give it a try and let me know your thoughts.
